Personal Web Site on comp.uark.edu

UA students, faculty, and staff have are given a comp.uark.edu account where they can create personal web pages (and store files and more). Log into your comp.uark.edu account using your UARK username and password. You have a quota of 300MB on your comp.uark.edu account and a 350MB hard limit. You can exceed your quota soft limit for one week, but you cannot exceed your hard limit. Note that your comp.uark.edu quota is NOT the same as your email quota.

Note: University departmental pages and Registered Student Organization sites can apply for an account on one of our departmental servers.

Getting Started

  1. Choose your HTML (web) editing software to use to create your web pages and site. University IT Services supports Dreamweaver and KompoZer.
    • Dreamweaver is an Adobe product used by several departments on campus for their web sites. Dreamweaver is available for use by appointment at the MultiMedia Resource Center where assistance is also available. IT Services also offers Dreamweaver workshops.
    • KompoZer is a free download and is also available in the General Access Computing Labs.
    • Many applications allow for saving as HTML/Web page. Once the page is created, it must be uploaded (published) to your account. You can use one of the available file transfer options for this. Be aware that many applications (such as Word) will create a subdirectory (folder) containing the page's images; this subdirectory must be recreated on your comp account.
Also, using your preferred file transfer option, you can put any file online for download by others using a web browser.
  2. Create your web pages and upload (publish) them to your comp account using one of the supported HTML editors. Make sure any images are also uploaded. All web page files including images and files for download, any file that should be accessible on the Web (HTML, images, PDFs, etc.) , must be in the public_html directory of your comp.uark.edu account (or in a subdirectory of public_html). You must specify this subdirectory when uploading your files (pages); this will vary according to the method that you use. public_html/ is a subdirectory (folder) in your comp.uark.edu account where your web page files should be located. Subdirectories can be created under public_html so that you can organize your web site, but if you put your web site files in your comp.uark.edu home directory or any other folder, they will not be accessible using a web browser.
  3. Make sure that the University disclaimer is visible on your home page. All personal home pages (your main page) on the comp.uark.edu server at the University of Arkansas MUST include the following disclaimer (as stated in the Code of Computing Practices (Section III, H, 2)):

These materials are not endorsed, approved, sponsored, or provided by or on behalf of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

The text of the disclaimer must be on your page. A link to the disclaimer is not acceptable.
See our Policies page for other policies to be aware of when creating a web site.
  4. View your page using a web browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. It's a good idea to view your page in multiple web browsers as the layout can change from one browser to another. URLs on comp are set up in this way:
    http://comp.uark.edu/~username
where "username" is your actual UARK username.
If the filename of the page you are wanting to view is NOT index.html, you will also need to add the filename to the end of the URL.  If you have created the file in a subdirectory, you will need to include the subdirectory in the path. If you have uploaded your file to comp.uark.edu into a subdirectory of public_html and named the file something other than index.html, your URL will be something like the following:
    http://comp.uark.edu/~username/directory/filename.html
where "directory" is the folder or path to the file on your account, and "filename.html" is the actual filename that you gave the page.
    Note
: Your URL is case sensitive. If the filename (or folders/directories) includes uppercase letters, for instance, they will be required in the URL.
  5. When your home page is ready, you can add it to Pig Tales, the University's listing of student, faculty, and staff personal home pages. You must fill out the Pig Tales Addition form to add your page; pages are not added to the list automatically and could take up to two business days to be added after review. The University disclaimer must be on your page for it to be added to the listing. Please view your page before submitting to make sure that the URL you are submitting is correct. If possible, view your live page on a computer other than the one on which you created the page as the browser might load the cached page and appear that the page is loading correctly from the server when it is not.

You can also create a personal site using MyPoint.
