U of A University Information Technology Services
UA Departmental Web SitesIf you need to update your department's web site, but are not familiar with web publishing, you will first need to find out on which server the web site resides, cavern.uark.edu, www3.uark.edu (Microsoft IIS Web Services), or comp.uark.edu, and you will need the username and the password for the account. If the password is not known, it must be reset by the owner of the account at PASSweb. You can contact University IT Services to find out the owner, if needed. If the account owner is no longer with the department, University IT Services can change the ownership to someone else. Next, you will need to find out if your department already has HTML editing software such as Dreamweaver. If there is none, the department can purchase an HTML editor, or you can use a free editor such as KompoZer. University IT Services supports Dreamweaver and KompoZer. RedDot is a web-based content manager. The RedDot Content Management system provides a simple interface to allow non-technical individuals a means to update the web pages for which they are responsible. This is the preferred method for maintaining college and departmental web sites on the University campus. See the Reddot Resource Center for information regarding the RedDot Content Management system and the University Web Guidelines for information regarding web and content requirements, logos, and colors. SharePoint for departmental use and Blackboard for use by instructors are some other options for presenting material online. Official University of Arkansas web pages for departments and student organizations are required by law to be ADA compliant and accessible to persons with disabilities. They must be readable by screen readers and have alternatives to graphical and scripted content. For information on ADA compliancy, see our ADA Requirements for University of Arkansas Web Pages and take the free ADA Accessibility training workshop. To find out more information on web development at the UA, see our Web Page Extras and Information page. If you will be required to supply images for the web site, you can contact the MultiMedia Resource Center staff for more information.
