Student Technology Fee

In 1998, the Associated Student Government proposed, and the students of the University accepted, a fee assessed for every student at two dollars ($2) per credit hour. This fee was specifically enacted to provide funding for technology having a direct impact on students. The fee has been used in the past to provide students with, among other things, computing labs and specialized computer equipment.  Read the Resolution

1997-98 Student Senate A Resolution 34

Sponsor: President Pro-Tempore Gary D. Moody

Co-Sponsors: Sens. Michael Berryman

Date Introduced: March 24, 1998

Action taken: Passed

A Resolution to place a referendum question on the Spring 1998 General Election ballot to enact a Technology fee.

Whereas: Computing has become an integral part of every student's college education; and

Whereas: The demand for computing services at the University of Arkansas increased by a factor of ten during the initial development of the resources; and

Whereas: The recent annual budgets for centrally-supported computing only increased at the three-percent (3%) rate of inflation, which does not allow the UA adequately address the needs of students who require access to email, world-wide-web servers, and other services; and

Whereas: Current funding levels will, at best, only maintain the status quo and are not consistent with other comparable universities; and

Whereas: A student-controlled technology fee would guarantee attention to this important resource;

Be it therefore resolved: That the following referendum question be placed on the ASG Spring 1998 general election ballot:

Shall a Technology Fee of not more than two (2) dollars per credit hour be instituted at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville with the following provisions:

  1. Increased dial-up access to the campus computer network.
  2. Increased lab support services, including extended operating hours.
  3. Improvements in campus computing facilities.
  4. Installation of network access ports in classrooms and other areas of campus.
  5. Initiation of faculty computer training to facilitate the integration of computing in class curricula and research.
  6. A committee of 5 students, 2 faculty, and 2 University IT Services representatives shall oversee the actual expenditures of the fee.
