University of Arkansas General Access Computing Labs (GACLs) do not allow the use of electronic chat clients such as AOL, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, etc. UarkJabber and JWChat are the only chat clients allowed in the GACLs. UarkJabber and JWChat provide an interface with these other clients without the need to install the other clients on lab computers.

The following activities are strictly prohibited when using UarkJabber or JWChat in the GACLs:

  • Use of UarkJabber or JWChat for non-academic activity when others are waiting to use the computer
  • Using threatening, abusive, harassing, or defamatory language
  • Making statements that are sexually explicit or grossly offensive, including blatant expressions of bigotry, racism, hatred, or profanity
  • Unauthorized or unsolicited advertising (spamming)
  • Any form of lottery/gambling
  • The transfer of files or the promotion of certain files that contain viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time bombs, cancelbots, corrupted files, or any other damaging software or programs that may damage the lab computers
  • Advertising or offering to sell or buy any products or services for business purposes
  • Impersonating someone else
  • Falsely representing oneself
  • Promoting or providing information about illegal activities
  • Indulging in activities that infringe upon anyone else's copyright(s)
  • Flooding - the act of sending many messages in a brief period of time

Neither the University nor its Internet access provider is responsible for the content of chat rooms.

Academic chat always must take precedence over non-academic chat. The administrative units responsible for computing labs on campus retain the authority to establish and to enforce policy that limits or prohibits excessive discussion room usage on computers within their labs.

The use of University computing resources is a privilege and use must lie within acceptable boundaries of the Code of Computing Practices.
