UA Information Provider Web Authoring

The University of Arkansas and the Department of University IT Services encourages colleges, departments, administrative offices, student organizations, and other University groups to create official University of Arkansas Web pages after becoming UA Information Providers. The cavern.uark.edu server is used for these official University of Arkansas Web pages.

Official University departments, organizations, and other groups interested in creating a web presence on www.uark.edu need to do the following:

  1. Request an Information Provider's computing account if your department or organization does not already has an account on cavern.uark.edu.

Apply for an Information Provider account by completing the Account ID Request Form available in the Online Forms section of the Request Forms and Docs selecting the UARKinfo Account ID section highlighted on the form.
The individual that supplies the "authorization signature" on the form is considered the official Information Provider and is ultimately responsible for the directories, files, content, and finished Web product created from that account. Examples of authorizing representatives include but are not limited to: department heads for academic departments, academic support departments, or campus administrative & service departments and faculty advisors for registered campus or student organizations.

  2. Read and comply with the University's Code of Computing Practice.

  3. Comply with the Guidelines for University of Arkansas Information Providers.

    • Information identifying the unit that is responsible for the page
    • Email address of a contact person
    • Link to the University of Arkansas home page on home page of site
    • Source of Reference data for each link or document that is not the original creation or compilation of the Information Provider
    • Creation date or last revision date of each document
    • Identification of any known omissions, problems, or "bugs" in the data

  4. Comply with ADA requirements.

Remember: Don't create a public_html directory on cavern.uark.edu accounts. Place the home page file in the root; you can also create subdirectories for better file organization.

Questions to ask:

  • Is the information on the site current and useful?

  • Is the information accurate?

  • Do the page layout and design lend themselves to easy retrieval of information?

  • Is the site user friendly? Can people find the information they need?

  • Do the menu choices make sense?

  • Does the page render properly from different browsers including Lynx and on different operating systems?

  • Do all the links on the pages work?
  • Do the pages use the same established publishing guidelines and editorial review procedures that apply to the department's print publications?

Information Providers are expected to be knowledgeable of and abide by additional computing/web publishing policies, particularly federal and state copyright laws.

You can find information and resources that can assist you in writing and designing Web pages at the UA's Web Development Headquarters.

When your official UA Web page is ready for publication, you can request that your page be linked up with the rest of the University of Arkansas Web site. To submit your link request, please contact urelinfo@uark.edu.
