Wireless Network

This network is publicly available to allow members of the University community an area of wireless coverage to access the network. Users must be in an area of wireless cover age to access the network. Setup instructions are for Windows, Macintosh, and Mobile Devices.

Coverage Maps

View a text list or a Google map of buildings with wireless access.

Wireless Encryption

The UA-WLAN network only encrypts the initial communication when you first authenticate (when your UARK username and password are passed across the network). After that point, the data transmission is not encrypted unless you take measures to encrypt it.

There are a number of easy measures to encrypt certain wireless transmissions. Checking email with an application like Outlook or others that support SSL will encrypt your traffic. An encrypted web page can be identified by the "https" (instead of http) at the beginning of that web page's address, and by an icon of a lock somewhere on the browser window (the placement of the lock varies from one browser to another).

Examples of campus web-based resources that are encrypted are web based email clients and ISIS. Command line type connections such as SSH will also provide an encrypted connection and should be used instead of Telnet.

Installing a Hub

A switch can be installed, but IT Services' Networking Services will only provide support to the network drop installed by the University and connected to Network Services managed equipment.  A hub, however, is not recommended since it creates a shared media network which has the potential for more performance and security issues between the machines connected to the hub.

Router installations by individuals or departments are not supported.  If improperly configured, routers can create connectivity problems for other users.  Such impact is a violation of the Code of Computing Practices.
