Ethernet Addresses

An Ethernet Address is also referred to as the network adapter address, mac address, physical address, Ethernet ID, or hardware address. The Ethernet Address is represented as a 12 character hexadecimal expression. An example of an Ethernet Address is: 00-00-C0-8E-A1-DE.

To find a Physical Address on a computer running Windows XP or Vista:

  1. Log in to XP or Vista.
  2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt.
  3. At the c: prompt type:
    ipconfig  /all
    (Note: There must be a space before the switch  /all.)
    and press Enter.

To find a Ethernet ID on a computer running Mac OS X:

  1. Log in to Mac OS X.
  2. Open the System Preferences from the Apple Menu or the Dock.
  3. In the System Preferences window, click the Network icon.
  4. In the Network window, select Built-in Ethernet.
  5. Click the Advanced button.
  6. Select the Ethernet tab.
  7. In the following window the Ethernet ID will be displayed as six pairs of hex-numeric values.
    For Example: 00:4a:01:06:ab:e3

Note: Earlier versions of Mac OS X don't have the Ethernet Tab. The Ethernet Address will be displayed within the TCP/IP tab.

Note: Some users may have to click on the Ethernet / Airport tab.
(Airport ID IS THE MAC ADDRESS.)
