IP Addresses

An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. An example on the UA campus would be: 130.184.12.132.

With an active Internet connection, you can find an IP address in Windows XP or Vista using the following steps:

  1. Click Start , All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt .
  2. At the c: prompt type:
    ipconfig  /all
(Note: There must be a space before the switch  /all.)
    and press Enter.
  3. The computer's IP configuration information appears. Make note of the IP Address.

With an active Internet connection, you can find an IP address in Mac OS X with the following steps:

  1. Open the System Preferences from the Apple Menu or the Dock.
  2. In the System Preferences window, click the Network icon.
  3. In the Network window click on Built-in Ethernet.
  4. The IP Address will now be displayed.
