IP Addresses
An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. An example on the UA campus would be: 130.184.12.132.
With an active Internet connection, you can find an IP address in Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 using the following steps:
- Click Start , All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt .
- At the c: prompt type:
ipconfig /all
(Note: There must be a space before the switch /all.)
and press Enter.
- The computer's IP configuration information appears. Make note of the IP Address.
With an active Internet connection, you can find an IP address in Mac OS X with the following steps:
- Open the System Preferences from the Apple Menu or the Dock.
- In the System Preferences window, click the Network icon.
- In the Network window click on Built-in Ethernet.
- The IP Address will now be displayed.
