Virtual Private Network

Note: VPN is currently (September 10, 2009) not compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 nor Macintosh Snow Leopard.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a tool that can be used by UARK users for secure access to the University network from off campus. VPN enables access to servers such as comp, cavern, www3, gizmo, and MyDocs as if on campus.

Note: Browse web pages, Telnet, SSH, ICA, RDP, and Outlook access features are not available at this time.

Network Access

To access the campus network from off campus:

  1. Open a web browser and go to vpn.uark.edu.
  2. Sign in using your UARK username and password.
  3. You will be prompted to install the Juniper Setup Client in order to connect; install the add-on.
  4. To set options, right-click the VPN icon in the system tray or dock.
  5. To end the VPN session, click Sign out within the web browser, or right-click the VPN icon within the task tray.

Resources Access

To access UA server resources from within the VPN interface:

  1. In the Search text box, type in the file share address, for example:
    \\mydocs.uark.edu\mydocs\documents\username
where "username" is your UARK username.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. Your share will appear.

Common network locations on campus (Windows and Macintosh):

  • For the comp.uark.edu server, use:
    \\comp.uark.edu\username
where "username" is your UARK username.
  • For the cavern.uark.edu server, use:
    \\cavern.uark.edu\username
where "username" is your cavern account username.
Note: Use only the first 8 characters of your password when mapping a drive to cavern.
  • For My Docs, use:
    \\MyDocs.uark.edu\mydocs\documents\username
where "username" is your UARK username.
  • For the Microsoft IIS server, use:
    \\new-www3.uark.edu\foldername$
where foldername is the actual folder name
Note: you must include $ after your foldername
  • For the gizmo.uark.edu server, use:
    \\gizmo.uark.edu\volumename
where "volumename" is your assigned volume title.

VPN Bookmarks

While viewing a share, click Bookmark Current Folder, Add Bookmark to add it to your bookmark list. To bookmark a folder, check the box next to the folder and click Bookmark Selected. To delete a bookmark, select the bookmark and click the Trash icon from the main page.
