Dial-up Internet Access at the University of Arkansas
To dial in to the University of Arkansas network to access the Internet, you must be a University student, faculty or staff member, or emeritus with a UARK username and password, a modem, and phone line.

Windows XP Dial-up Setup Instructions
First ensure that you are in the Windows XP version of the startup menu by right-clicking on Start and choosing Properties. "Start menu" should be selected.
- Select Start, Control Panel, Network Connections.
- Click Create a New Connection, and click Next.
- Select Connect to the Internet, and click Next.
- Select Set up my Connection Manually, and click Next.
- Select Connect Using a Dial-up Modem, and click Next.
- In the ISP Name field type:
U of A
- In the Phone Number field, enter the number appropriate to your classification.
- Choose My Use Only (the connection will only be available when you are logged in under your account).
- In the Username field, enter your UARK username.
- In the Password field, enter your UARK password.
- In the Confirm Password field, enter your UARK password again.
- Select the preference for making this the default connection, and click Next.
- If desired, check the Add a Shortcut to this Connection to my Desktop box; click Finish.
Changing the dial-up phone number (Windows)
- Select Start, Control Panel, Network Connections.
- Right-click on the network connection you want to change and select Properties.
- In the Phone Number field, replace the telephone number listed with the new dial-in access number; Click OK to save the changes.
Changing a Saved Password (Windows)
When you change your password in Passweb, it does not automatically change your password in your dial-up setup. The following instructions tell you how to accomplish this:
- Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections.
- Double-click on the dial-up connection you would like to edit. If the modem begins dialing, you will not see the dialog box and will need to right-click on the connection, select Properties and the Options tab, and check the checkbox for Prompt for name and password.
- Click on the password field where it says: To change the saved password, click here.
- Type the new password.
- Press Enter and your password will be saved.
Macintosh OS X Dial-up Setup Instructions
- Open the System Preferences from the Dock; then select Network.
- In the Network window, select Internal Modem from the Show: dropdown menu.
- Select the PPP tab. Enter the following information:
- Service Provider: University of Arkansas
- Account Name: Your UARK username
- Password: Your UARK password
- Telephone Number: Enter the correct number for your classification.
Note: The Service Provider and Alternate Number fields are optional, but might be useful for keeping track of configurations if you use more than one ISP and getting connected when the primary number is busy.
Click the PPP Options... button to see additional settings. In the Options dialog box:
- Check Connect automatically when needed if you want your system to automatically dial in when you launch an application that uses TCP/IP such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, or email clients (if left unchecked, you'll have to use the Internet Connect application detailed below).
- Other Session Options can be set to your preference. If you are unsure, leave them in the default setting; they can always be changed later.
- Leave the Advanced Options in their default settings.
- Click OK to the PPP options when done, and then click the Modem tab. If the kind of modem your machine is using is not displayed, click on the Modem: dropdown menu and scroll to the selection that best matches your modem type/model. If you don't see your modem in the list, you might need to reinstall the software that came with your modem. Click Apply Now.
- If you did NOT select the Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications checkbox in the PPP Options window, you must use the Internet Connect application to first dial in to the UA modems and establish the connection to the Internet. Internet Connect is found in the Applications folder. Double-click the Internet Connect icon to launch the application; in the resulting window, click the Connect button to initialize the modem and dial in to the University resources.
Changing the dial-up phone number (Macintosh)
- Open the System Preferences from the Dock; then select Network.
- In the Network window, select Internal Modem from the Show: dropdown menu.
- Select the PPP tab.
- Telephone Number: Replace the telephone number listed with the new dial-in access number and click Apply Now.
Changing a Saved Password (Macintosh)
Note: When you change your password in PASSweb it does not automatically change your password in your computer's dial-up setup. The following instructions tell you how to accomplish this:
- Open the System Preferences from the Dock; then select Network.
- In the Network window, select Internal Modem from the Show: dropdown menu.
- Select the PPP tab.
- Password: Enter your UARK password.
- Click Apply Now and your password will be saved.
