QWS3270 Secure

QWS3270 Secure is a client application which allows a network-attached PC running Windows to connect to an IBM mainframe using the Windows Sockets interface in 3270 mode (TN3270).

So that the University will be in compliance with Arkansas state security standards, effective August 1, 2006, all BASIS users will be required to use a secure 3270 terminal software product that encrypts sensitive data as it passes over the network. Admin users running the Windows operating system are required to use QWS3270 Secure to access BASIS.

You must enter your UARK email address (ex. username@uark.edu) and password to download QWS3270 Secure. Use the following link to download the QWS3270 Secure client software.

Double-click the downloaded file to begin installation, and follow the instructions. It takes several minutes to scan your computer for older versions of QWS3270 Secure. If you are doing a new installation of the program, installation should be automated after you click the Extract command.

Once you have installed QWS3270 Secure, a desktop shortcut for Admin will be placed on the desktop. QWS3270 Secure will also be available in your Programs folder.

Troubleshooting

QWS3270 Secure does not show admin.uark.edu in the host list when I log in as another user.

QWS3270 Secure stores the mainframe session information in the "current user" Application Data area. As such, if you install the application as one user and log in as another two things can happen:

  • If the user has never logged into that workstation before (and does not have a profile on it), he/she will get the default profile and will also get the session information from there and the "admin" icon will function normally.
  • If he/she already has a profile (the most likely scenario), the session information has been stored under the user that did the installation and the icon will not have a session to reference.

To resolve this, log in as the correct user and click the Setup Admin Session icon in Start, All Programs, QWS3270 Secure. This will copy the session information to the appropriate location for the current user with the correct security settings for admin.uark.edu.

Why can't I type in the last field on the far right side on my BASIS screen?

If you can't type in the last field (or last character of the last field) on the far right side on your BASIS screen, the Entry Assist box has been checked in the Entry Assist section of your QWS 3270 Emulator software session settings.

Why don't I see the logon screen when I try to log on to the Administrative Computer System?

If you try and execute QWS to reach the main menu of the Adminstrative Computer System and the screen is blank or has a message to the effect of "Host not found",  "can't get admin.uark.edu host entry", or "connection failed", something is wrong on the mainframe side or with the network. You should call the University Information Technology Services Help Desk at 575-2905 and report that Admin appears to be down because you cannot get the "Admin logon screen" and tell them the message you are receiving on your screen.
