BASIS
There is a series of steps to go through to get access to and use the BASIS system. The process is documented on the BASIS New User page. There is a series of screens to go through to log on to BASIS. The process is documented on the How To Log On To BASIS page. For more about how desks work, see the Desk Administration page. Your PC communicates with the mainframe via 3270 emulation software. Most users on campus use the QWS3270 Secure emulation software to establish their mainframe sessions with BASIS. For more information about how that process works and the changes you can make to customize your mainframe session, go to our How Your Computer Communicates with BASIS page.
If you can log on to Natural, but are denied access to an application, it is because your desk hasn't been granted access to the application. You can go to the Application Owners - Contact Information page to find out who to contact for the specific application you need to access.
QWS3270 Secure is a client application which allows a network-attached PC running Windows to connect to an IBM mainframe using the Windows Sockets interface in 3270 mode (TN3270). Admin users running the Windows operating system are required to use QWS3270 Secure to access BASIS. See the QWS3270 Secure page for download, installation, setup, troubleshooting, and support.

webBASIS
You can log on to webBASIS and access BASIS information on the Web by going to http://basis.uark.edu/ and logging in with your UARK username and password. If you try to log into webBASIS three times consecutively with incorrect information, you will be denied access. The timer will automatically expire after 30 minutes. Once the timer expires, be sure to use your UARK username and UARK password to log in.
University Information Technology Services has documented a problem regarding the inability of older versions of Macintosh OS users to access the webBASIS system using Apple's Safari web browser. To ensure compatibility with older versions, Macintosh OS users should utilize the Firefox web browser to access webBASIS. The Firefox web browser is available for download at http://www.mozilla.com/.

Printing
You can print selected items, such as reports, from your BASIS session. You must have a networked printer or a printer attached to a networked computer to which the reports can be sent. More information about printing from BASIS can be found at the Printing From BASIS page.
To Print BASIS Reports on a Networked Printer
- Verify your printer meets BASIS guidelines listed below.
- Connect the BASIS compatible printer to a live network jack.
- Print a configuration page from the printer's console following the instructions in the manual for your model printer. Find the printer's LAN hardware address (network address, ethernet address, Mac address) in order to obtain a DHCP entry. (For an external print server, the LAN hardware address should be printed on a label on the bottom of the box.)
Old DHCP System
- Submit an AskIT request; enter the subject Network and the Description DHCP entry for printer.
- When you receive confirmation that your DHCP entry has been made, make note of the IP Address in order to request a domain name (DNS) for the printer.
- Log into the Domain Name Registration Request to request a DNS name for the printer using the online form.
- When you have received confirmation that the DNS entry for your printer has been made, submit an AskIT case requesting a BASIS print setup. Enter the subject Network, and provide the following information as the Description:
- Printer Domain Name
- Contact name
- Phone number
- Budgetary Unit (4-digit dept code)
- Email address

The average turnaround time on this type of setup is approximately 10 working days. After the printer is set up, a set of test pages will be sent to verify functionality.
New Network Registration System
