Psi Messenger for Macintosh OS X and UA Jabber

Setup

  1. Download the Psi client software.
  2. Drag the Psi icon into your applications folder.
  3. Double-click the Psi icon to start the program.
  4. Give the new account a name.
  5. Leave the Register new account box unchecked.
  6. Click the Add button.
  7. Select General, Configure Toolbars from the menu.
  8. Click to place a check mark in the Enabled box.
  9. Click Apply; click OK.
  10. Within Account Properties, select the Account tab.
  11. In the Jabber ID: field, type:
    uarkusername@jabber.uark.edu
    replacing "uarkusername" with your actual UARK username.
  12. Select the Connection tab.
  13. Check Use SSL encryption (to server).
  14. Check Allow Plain text Login.
  15. Check Manually Specify Server Host/Port.
  16. In the Host: field, type:
    jabber.uark.edu
  17. In the port field, type:
    5223
  18. Click Save. Click the dropdown menu and select Online.
  19. Enter your UARK password in the Need Password dialog box and click OK.
    If a message appears with failed certificate information, click Continue.
  20. When the dropdown box at the bottom of the Psi screen reads "Online", you are connected.

Transports

You must have a valid username and password for MSN, AIM, ICQ, and/or Yahoo! in order to activate the transport for that particular IM system.

  1. Click the Psi button at the bottom left of the main Psi window and go to Service Discovery.
  2. Double-click the service with which you wish to register, and enter your account information for that service:
    • For AIM, use your screen name and password.
    • For ICQ, use your UIN number and password.
    • For Yahoo!, use your username and password.
    • For MSN, use your Windows Live ID and password.
  3. Click Register.

Configuring Psi to use an encrypted connection with jabber.uark.edu

To enable SSL you must select the Use SSL encryption check box and the Allow Plaintext login check box from the Connection tab within Account Properties.

Joining Public and Private Chat Rooms

Joining a Public Chat Room

  1. Click the Psi button at the bottom left of the main Psi window and go to Service Discovery.
  2. Click the triangle icon the left of "Public Chatrooms" to display the list of available public chat rooms. 
  3. Double click the name of the chat room that you want to join.
  4. Enter a name in the Nickname field.  Your nickname is the name that identifies you in the chat room.
  5. Click the Join button.

Note: You cannot join a password protected chat room with Psi.

Some public chat rooms are password protected. To see a descriptive list of public chat rooms on jabber.uark.edu, including the password requirement, visit the Jabber Chat Room Directory.

Joining a Private Chat Room

In order to join a private chat room, you must know the name of the room you want to join.

Click the Psi button at the bottom left of the main Psi window and go to Join Groupchat.
From the Join Groupchat windows, configure as follows:
Host = prv.conference.jabber.uark.edu
Room = Name of desired chat room. 
Enter a name in the Nickname field. Your nickname is the name that identifies you in the chat room.
Click the Join button.

Note: You cannot join a password protected chat room with Psi.

Searching for UA Jabber Contacts

  1. From the Psi button at the bottom left of the main Psi window menu, select Service Discovery, select UARK User Directory
    Please note that the name field requires that you enter the person's first and last name. For this reason it is best to use another search field such as Last Name for a more accurate search. 
  2. When you have found your contact, click the user's entry to highlight it and click the Add Contact button.

Adding a UA Jabber Contact

  1. Click the Psi button at the bottom left of the main Psi window and go to Add a contact. Enter your contact's Jabber ID into the Jabber ID field as: uarkusername@jabber.uark.edu (replace "uarkusername" with the contact's actual UARK username).
  2. Enter a nickname and a group (optional). If you want to be able to see your contacts when they're online, you should select Request authorization when adding.
  3. Click the Add button.

Adding an MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo! user

Note: To add a contact who is using the MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo! IM system, you must first register with the MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo! Transport. Refer to the Transports section in this document for instruction on registering with Transports.

  1. Click the Psi button at the bottom left of the main Psi window and go to Add a contact.
  2. From the Service dropdown menu select the correct Transport for the IM service that your contact uses: MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo!.
  3. Enter the contact's information:
    • For AIM, enter the user's screen name.
    • For ICQ, enter the user's UIN.
    • For Yahoo!, enter the user's Yahoo! ID.
    • For MSN, enter the user's complete Windows Live ID, such as msnuser@hotmail.com.
  4. Click the Get Jabber ID button.
  5. Enter a Nickname and a group (optional). If you want to be able to see your contacts when they're online, you should select Request authorization when adding.
  6. Click Add.
