Psi Messenger for Windows and UA Jabber
Setup
- Download the Psi Windows client intaller.
- You might see the File Download Security Warning screen. Click Run to start the install. If you see the Unknown Publisher warning, click Run to start the installer. If you are using Firefox and you downloaded the installer, double-click the downloaded flile to start the installer. Click OK at the Open Executable File? window.
- Click OK to select English; click Next at the Welcome screen.
- At the License Agreement screen, click I Agree.
- In the Choose Components screen, click Next to accept the default components.
- Click Next to accept the default installation folder.
- Click Install on the Choose Install Location screen.
- When you see that the installation has completed, unselect the Show Readme check box and click Finish.
- At the Account setup window, choose Use an existing account.
- At the Account Properties screen in the Account tab, type your Jabber ID in the Jabber ID field. Your Jabber ID is your UARK username@jabber.uark.edu. For example, if your UARK username is jsmith then your Jabber ID will be jsmith@jabber.uark.edu.
- Enter your UARK password in the Password field.
- From the Connection tab set the Encrypt connection option to Always and set Allow plaintext authentication to Over encrypted connection; click Save.
- Click Close when you see the Useful Tips window.
- To log in, click the Offline dropdown at the bottom of the Psi main window and click Online.
- A window will appear that gives you the opportunity to enter some personal information about yourself. Entering this information is optional. Click Publish if you choose to share this information with other users on jabber.uark.edu, or click Close to close the window.
- The icon next to the word Online will turn orange to indicate that your status is now online.
Transports
Transports are Jabber components used for interacting with users of proprietary IM networks such as MSN, AIM, ICQ, and/or Yahoo! from within the Psi client. You must have a valid username and password for MSN, AIM, ICQ, and/or Yahoo! in order to register with (.i.e. activate) the transport for that particular IM system.
- To register with a Transport, click on General then Service Discovery. You will see the Transports.
- Double-click the Transport with which you want to register (i.e. the AIM Transport). This will bring up the registration window for that Transport.
- Enter your account information for that particular IM:
- For AIM, use your screen name and password.
- For ICQ, use your UIN number and password.
- For Yahoo!, use your username and password.
- For MSN, use your complete Windows Live ID such as msnuser@hotmail.com and password.
- Click Register to complete the registration with the Transport.
Adding a UA Jabber Contact
You can add a contact one of two ways. If you already know your contact's Jabber ID, you can use the Add User dialog box, or you can search for a contact using the User Directory and add the user from your search.
Adding a UA Jabber contact using the Add User dialog box
- From the main Psi window, click General then click Add a contact. Make sure that it says Jabber in the Service dropdown menu.
- Type your contact's complete Jabber ID in the Jabber ID field. Please note that U of A campus Jabber IDs use the following format:
username@jabber.uark.edu where "username" is your UARK username. So, if want to add a Jabber contact, and you know that the UARK username is jsmith then just type jsmith@jabber.uark.edu in the Jabber ID field to add this person as a Jabber contact.
- Enter a Nickname and a Group (optional). Select Request authorization when adding to see your contact's online presence status.
- Click Add.
Adding a UA Jabber contact by searching the User Directory
- From the main Psi window, click General then click Service Discovery.
- Double-click on UARK User Directory to bring up the search window.
- Enter a search value in one of the search fields, and click Search. Please note that the name field requires that you enter the person's first and last name. For this reason it is best to use another search field such as Last Name for a more accurate search.
- When you have found your contact, click the user's entry to highlight it and click the Add Contact button.
Your new contact will receive a subscription request from you which can be accepted or rejected. If your request is accepted, you will receive a subscription request and the contact will appear in your contact list.
Adding a Google Talk user
- From the main Psi window, click General, and then Add a contact. Make sure that it says Jabber in the Service dropdown menu.
- Type your contact's Google account in the Jabber ID field (i.e. guser@gmail.com).
- Enter a Nickname and a Group (optional). Select Request authorization when adding to see your contact's online presence status.
- Click Add.
Adding an MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo! user
Note: To add a contact who is using the MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo! IM system, you must first register with the MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo! Transport. Refer to the Transports section in this document for instructions on registering with Transports.
- From the main Psi window, click General, then Add a contact.
- From the Service dropdown menu, select the correct Transport for the IM service that your contact uses: MSN, AIM, ICQ, or Yahoo!.
- Enter the contact's information:
- For AIM, enter the user's screen name.
- For ICQ, enter the user's UIN.
- For Yahoo!, enter the user's Yahoo! ID.
- For MSN, enter the user's complete Windows Live ID, such as msnuser@hotmail.com.
- Click the Get Jabber ID button.
- Enter a Nickname and a Group (optional). Select Request authorization when adding to see your contact's online presence status.
- Click Add.
Viewing Chat History
To view the chat history for a contact in Psi:
- Right-click on your contact from the main Psi window.
- Select History from the pop-up menu.
Joining Public and Private Chat Rooms
Joining a Public Chat Room
- From the main Psi window, click General, then Service Discovery.
- Click the plus sign (+) next to Public Chatrooms to display the list of public chat rooms.
- Double-click on the name of the chat room that you want to join.
- If the chat room is password protected, enter the password in the Password field.
- Click the Join button in the Join Groupchat window to enter the room.
Note: Some public chat rooms are password protected. To see a descriptive list of public chat rooms on jabber.uark.edu, including the password requirement, see the Public Chat Room Directory.
Joining a Private Chat Room
To join a private chat room, you must know the name of the room.
- From the main Psi window, click General, then Service Discovery.
- Right-click on the Private Chatrooms service and click Join from the pop-up menu.
- Type the name of the private chat room that you want to join in the Room field; type the name of the room in lowercase letters only.
- If the chat room is password protected, enter the password in the Password field.
- Click Join to enter the room.
Creating Chat Room Bookmarks
- At the top of your contact list you will see the the name of the Jabber server, jabber.uark.edu. Right-click on jabber.uark.edu, mouse over Bookmarks, and select Manage.
- Click Add.
- In the Host field, enter:
conference.uark.edu for a public chat room or prv.conference.uark.edu for a private chat room.
- Enter the name of the room on the Room field. The room name should be entered in lowercase.
- Enter a Nickname (optional) and the password if the room is password protected.
- Select Auto-join if you want to join the room when you log in.
