Windows Off Campus Installation of Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Endpoint ProtectionOptions for obtaining a copy of the Symantec AntiVirus software or Symantec Endpoint Protection (includes antivirus as well as firewall and intrusion prevention tools) for off campus:
Note: Before installing Symantec AntiVirus software or Symantec Endpoint Protection (it includes antivirus as well as firewall and intrusion prevention tools) on your computer, uninstall any existing virus protection software. The Windows Firewall that was installed as part of Windows XP service pack 2 will be automatically disabled after installation of Symantec Client Security.
- Check out the software. The main circulation desk at Mullins Library has CDs on reserve for a two day checkout.
- Download and copy the software from any General Access Computing Lab* onto a user-provided CDR or USB Memory Drive. Assistance will be provided if requested.
- Bring a blank CD to the IT Services help desk in ADSB to have the software copied onto the CD for you.
*Note: External media (USB Memory Drives, CDRs, etc.) are not available for purchase in the labs. Using external media with lab computers is done entirely at a person's own risk. Information Technology Services and the University of Arkansas are not responsible for replacing any personal external media used in any lab workstation for any reason.
Download
- You will be prompted to enter your UARK username and password to begin the download. Include GACL\ or @uark.edu with your UARK username to authenticate (ex. "GACL\username" or "username@uark.edu" (Replace "username" with your UARK username).
- Currently it is not recommended to download Symantec AntiVirus via a UA dial-up connection. The overall download is over 20 MB and at standard baud rates it cannot be guaranteed that you will be able to download all of the files in one session.
Windows
- When uninstalling existing virus protection software it is preferable to use the uninstall option in the program's folder or the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. It is very important to reboot the machine after uninstalling software and before installing the new version.
- If you run a personal firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, temporarily shut it down. If you run the firewall in a high security mode, be sure to give access to the antivirus server so that definitions can be downloaded.
- Run LiveUpdate to update your virus definition files.
- Schedule future LiveUpdates to run automatically in order to keep virus definitions current.
- Periodically monitor your virus definition files. Your virus definitions should not be more than two weeks old.
