Scanning Images and Documents

Flatbed scanners are available for use at General Access Computer Labs in the Union, Enhanced Learning Center (Gregson Hall), Mullins Library, ADSB, and the NW Quad B.

Scanning with PCs in the General Access Computer Labs

Though the scanning software is linked from the workstation desktop, it is suggested that you place your image or document on the scan bed and press the GO button on the front of the scanner. By default, the software creates a subdirectory named by year and month (for example, 2006-06 (Jun)) that is in the \My Pictures\ directory of the \My Documents\ directory. If your available space (300 megs) is filled, you will receive error messages indicating there is not enough room for your documents.

  1. For images of photos or documents, place your photo or document face down on the scanner glass and press the GO button on the front of the scanner. The software will start and show you what is on the scanner.
  2. With the mouse, click and drag to draw a box around the image or area to be scanned.
  3. Click Accept in the scanner window.
  4. To scan a new image, change the photo or document in the scanner and click New Scan in the scanner window.
  5. When you are done scanning, click No when asked if you have more to scan.
  6. An image editing window will show you the scans in the directory it created. Double-click on an image to crop or modify it if needed.
  7. Click Save As to change the name of the file and save the changes.

Scanning with Macs in the Arkansas Union Computer Lab

After logging into the workstation, click the red SCAN button in the dock (the list of programs lined up along the bottom of the screen).

  • If a dialog box indicating the need for installation of a system extension pops up, click OK.
  • If an "Authenticate" box asks for an admin ID and password, click Cancel.
  • In the "Select Scanner" box, click OK.
  • In the "Start in Guided Mode" window, click NO if you have any familiarity with the software or YES if you want to be guided step by step through the enumerated process below.
  • When you get a dialog box regarding Optical Character Recognition, click OK. The Mac scanners create images only and don't have OCR installed.
  • The scanner will show you what's on the glass.
  • If there are multiple selection boxes on the scanner screen, use the delete key to get rid of all but one. Adjust the size of the selection box by clicking and dragging the handles on the sides and corners, or move the entire box by clicking and dragging.

In the center column of the ScanWise window, the features and functions are:

  1. Original Type: Select whatever most closely matches the item you are going to scan. If you are unsure, use Print (other).
  2. Destination: default is File.
  3. Image Control: allows you to choose color, grayscale, or black & white (high contrast) prints.
  4. Dimensions: gives you options to scale up or down (size), change the resolution (DPI), and orientation of the image.

Click the large Scan button.

  • In the "Save" window, give the image a name and include the file suffix (.jpg).
  • In the "Where" line, click the pop-up button (blue with arrows on the right end of the line), and select Desktop.
  • Click Save, and OK.

If you are scanning more than one file, after the progress bar indicates completion of the scan, put the next image or document on the scan bed and click the red Preview button at the top of the central column.

Files and images saved to the desktop can be attached to email or FTPed to your comp.uark.edu account using FUGU (the startup icon is a black and white fish in the dock).
