Microsoft File Storage Services

Microsoft File Storage Services allows centralized storage and collaborative sharing of files on a central server. Different users can view or edit the same file over the network. Files can be accessed from multiple locations, including off-campus, and the server is backed up nightly. Storage space is available to University departments and registered student organizations without any personnel, maintenance, equipment, or software overhead.

To request space, complete and submit the Microsoft File Storage Services request form which can be found on the Request Forms and Documents page.

Specifications

  • The default volume size is 250 MB at no charge. Additional space is available upon request and agreement of fee.
  • Secure File Transfer (SFTP) for Windows and Macintosh
  • SMB (Server Message Block) allows you to map a network drive in Windows or create a desktop shortcut in Macintosh OSX. (on campus only)
  • Print queues are not available.

File storage and transfer options for Computing Services Microsoft File Server (gizmo.uark.edu)

Note: If you map a drive using netbios resolution (for example: \\gizmo\volumename), you might experience unreliable connections.  Map the drive(s) with the Fully Qualified Domain Name (for example: \\gizmo.uark.edu\volumename) to resolve the issue.

Organizational Units and Administrative Tools
(Available for departmental volumes only)

A departmental volume can be set up as an Organizational Unit (OU). With an OU, a user can be granted administrative authority for all organizational units in a domain or for a single organizational unit. In order to manage an OU, additional tools and utilities must be installed. These are available in the Adminpak.msi files for Windows XP. OUs are only necessary within our Active Directory domain if the creation of Machine Accounts or Security Groups is planned. A Security Group is a mechanism that will allow access to be granted to domain resources on a group-wide scale instead of having to be granted to individuals repeatedly for different resources.

Training and consultation are available; please see our IT Workshops page.
