Checkout, Time Limits, and Availability

Laptop checkout is limited to current UA students, faculty, and staff. Checkout is through the Mullins Library Circulation Desk Student Technology Center.

Student Loan Agreement

  • Checkout is on first come, first serve basis; no reserves or renewals.
  • Loan period varies depending on the type of laptop checked out and the location of the checkout. Short-term laptops are available for three hours. Other laptops may be checked out for 48 hours, depending on place and type of checkout.
  • Borrowers accept responsibility for loss or damage by signing a laptop loan agreement.

Fines and Liability

  • Overdue laptops accrue a fine of $10.00 per hour or any portion thereof.
  • The borrower is responsible for any loss or damage to the laptop.
  • A replacement charge of up to $3000 may be charged for loss or damage.
  • Contact the Circulation Department of the library at 575-4104 for invoice questions, the Student Technology Center at 575-8602, or the Enhanced Learning Center at 575-2885.

Saving Your Work

It is important to save your work to media of your control prior to checking in the laptop (work will not be saved or remain on the laptop once it is checked in).

Options for saving include:

  • Email the work (files) to your email account.
  • FTP the files to your comp.uark.edu account.
  • Save files to a USB drive.

If you can not make a connection to the network to save your work, assistance is available from the lab operator in the General Access Computing Lab at Mullins Library, the front desk of the Student Technology Center, or the Enhanced Learning Center.

Printing

If you check out one of the laptops in the Mullins Library you will be able to print only in the General Access Computing Lab (GACL) where you checked it out. Computers checked out from the Student Technology Center (STC) are not able to print to GACL printers. Make sure you are in an area of wireless coverage. Print will output to the General Access Computing Lab (GACL) printer in your area. You can release your print job at the station next to the printer and pick it up.

Getting on the Internet

Users can access the Internet from anywhere on campus that is within the UA-WLAN coverage area. Student Technology Center (STC) laptops cannot be used with dial-up service or by landline.

Campus Wireless Coverage Maps

Areas in the Student Union include the common area outside of the STC, GACL Lab, and RZ's, meeting rooms surrounding the Servery, and meeting rooms on the 5th floor. Areas in Mullins Library include all of the student study carrels and the meeting/classrooms on the first floor, the entire lobby level, and most of levels 3 and 4. Wireless coverage is also available at the Walton College of Business.

To log into the network, users will be required to open a web browser (Internet Explorer, for example) and will be prompted with the IP-Nexus screen for network authentication. The user will then be required to enter a UARK username and password.

Support

Technical support and assistance with applications software should be directed to the Computing Services Lab Operator on duty in Mullins Library and the Student Technology Center. Questions regarding the lending services of the laptops may be directed to Mullins Library Circulation Desk at 575-4104, the Student Technology Center at 575-8602, or the Enhanced Learning Center at 575-2885.
