Windows Mail

Account Information

  1. Open Windows Mail (click the Vista button, and click
    Email
    Windows Mail).
  2. From the menu bar select Tools, Accounts, Add.
  3. Select Email Account and click Next.
  4. Enter your name in the Display name field. Click Next.
  5. Enter your email address in the Email address field. Click Next.
  6. Select IMAP as the Incoming email server type.
  7. Enter:
    mail.uark.edu
    for the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server.
  8. If you are On Campus enter:
    mail.uark.edu
    for the Outgoing email server (SMTP)
    If you are Off Campus, or on a laptop that will be used off campus to send email, enter:
    smtp.uark.edu
    for the Outgoing email server (SMTP)
  9. Check the box Outgoing server requires authentication. Click Next.
  10. Your UARK username is entered in the Email username field.
  11. Fill in your password in the Password field.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Ensure the account you just created is selected. Click Properties.
  14. Click the Advanced tab.
    If you are On Campus, check This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both the Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming Mail (IMAP) servers.
    If you are Off Campus, or on a laptop that will be used off campus to send email,
    check This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both the Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming Mail (IMAP) servers.
    Change the port number under Outgoing Mail (SMTP): to 2525.
  15. Click OK; then Close.

Accessing the UA Directory

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol provides a simple protocol that allows you to access and search email addresses on campus.
  1. Open Windows Mail.
  2. From the menu bar, click Tools, Accounts, Add.
  3. Select Directory Service and click Next.
  4. For the Internet directory (LDAP) server name, enter:
    acme.uark.edu
  5. Leave the My LDAP server requires me to log on box unchecked and click Next.
  6. Select Yes to using this directory service to check addresses.
  7. Click Next; then Finish.
  8. You will return to the Internet Accounts window. Ensure the account you just created is selected and click Properties.
    Note: You may need to expand the Directory Service category by clicking the arrow.
  9. Click the Advanced tab and for the Search base enter:
    ou=People,o=uark.edu,o=UoA
  10. Click OK; then Close.

HTML or Rich Text

Not everyone has email software that is compatible with formatted text features available within Windows Mail, so they cannot see the intended benefits. Many times what is seen is garbled text, or the actual HTML code behind the message. Plain text is recommended for universal compatibility.

  1. Open Windows Mail.
  2. From the menu bar, click Tools, Options.
  3. Select the Send tab.
  4. Under Mail Sending Format select Plain Text.
  5. Click OK.

Deleting Mail

To PERMANENTLY remove deleted email from the email server:

  1. Open Windows Mail.
  2. From the menu bar click Tools, Options.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Click the Maintenance button.
  5. Check the Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folders box.
  6. Click Close; then OK.

Account Maintenance

Go to mail.uark.edu and click the Account Summary and Options link to forward your email, set a vacation message, filter out unwanted email messages, and check your email quota.

Expanding Full Headers

Full headers are needed for error tracing and abuse reporting. If you have received abusive email and would like to report it, forward the email to abuse@uark.edu with the headers fully expanded.

To expand full headers in Windows Mail:

  1. While viewing a message, click File, Properties.
  2. Click the Details tab.
  3. The expanded header is displayed in the Internet headers for this message field.
  4. To send the full header, copy and paste the information into a new message.
