LISTSERV

LISTSERV is a system that allows creation, management, and control of large electronic mailing lists for discussion of a specific topic. Electronic mailing lists make it possible for large groups of people to discuss a subject via email. If you subscribe to a mailing list, any mail that is sent to that list will be sent on to you and everyone else on the list. Any mail that you send to the list is redistributed out to everyone else on the list. There are many different mailing lists to subscribe to, each one with its own topic. Some mailing lists are also mirrored to a newsgroup. If you subscribe to a mailing list, make sure to keep the message that will be returned to you when you subscribe. This message will have instructions on how to unsubscribe and other information. Also, be aware that some lists are "high volume" lists, and it is possible that after subscribing to one of these you might receive more email than you are prepared to handle.

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

To subscribe to a LISTSERV mailing list, send an email to:
listserv@listserv.uark.edu
with the following in the message body (do not include a subject or other text (such as a signature) in the message):
subscribe listname fullname
where "listname" is the name of the list to which you want to subscribe and "fullname" is your full name.

Once subscribed, all messages sent to LISTSERV must be sent from the address with which you originally subscribed.

To unsubscribe from a LISTSERV mailing list, send an email from the account from which you are subscribed to the list to:
listserv@listserv.uark.edu
with the following in the message body (do not include a subject or other text (such as a signature) in the message):
signoff listname
where "listname" is the name of the list to which you want to subscribe.

You can also use the web interface to subscribe to and unsubscribe from LISTSERV mailing lists. Go to the LISTSERV Subscriber's Corner and log in (you will need to create a password the first time). Once you are logged in, you will see a listing of LISTSERV lists to which you are subscribed. Click on a list name to view your settings for that list and, if needed, change the settings or unsubscribe from the list.

You can view a listing of public UA LISTSERV mailing lists at the Lists hosted at LISTSERV.UARK.EDU page. You can click on a list name to view the list's information and settings. From the list's page, click "Web archive interface" and then click "Join or leave the list" to subscribe.

Receiving Messages

To receive the messages that you send to a LISTSERV mailing list, send an email to:
listserv@listserv.uark.edu
with the following in the message body (do not include a subject or other text (such as a signature) in the message):
set listname noack repro
where "listname" is the name of the list from which you would like to receive your own messages.

You can also log into the LISTSERV Subscriber's Corner, click on a list name to view, and change the list settings. In the Acknowledgements section, select the radio button for "Receive copy of own postings". Click the Update Options button.

The digest subscription type for a LISTSERV will allow you to receive one message each day with all posts to the list from that day. To receive messages in digest form:

  1. Address an email to:
    listserv@listserv.uark.edu
  2. Do not include a subject or signature file.
  3. Type the message:
    SET ListName DIGEST
  4. Replace ListName with the name of the list.
  5. Send the email.
Note: The email must be sent from the same email account that is subscribed to the list.

or

  1. Go to the LISTSERV Subscriber's Corner.
  2. Log in; if you have never logged in to the LISTSERV site before, you will be asked to create a password.
  3. Once you are logged in and can see the listing of lists to which you are subscribed, click on the list to change the subscription type.
  4. Select one of the Digest options for the list.
  5. Click the Update Options button.

Passwords

If you have forgotten your LISTSERV password, go to the LISTSERV Subscriber's Corner, and in the navigation bar on the left, click Log in. From the login screen, you can then click the Change password button. If you are already logged in, click the Change Password link in the navigation bar.

List Owners

To request the creation of a list, you must download and complete the 'Request for LISTSERV or Netnews (Usenet) Newsgroup Service' form available in the Request Forms section of the Request Forms and Docs.

You will be notified when your request has either been approved or denied by University IT Services. Allow approximately 15 working days. Approval is based on whether or not the list or newsgroup serves a distinct purpose associated with the University's goals and whether or not it duplicates a list or newsgroup already in existence. Every list or newsgroup must be sponsored by a University department.

The following individuals or groups are eligible for LISTSERV list services or newsgroup creation:

  • UA faculty and staff members with approval signature from the sponsoring department head
  • UA Registered Student Organizations (RSO) through the Office for Student Involvement and Leadership
  • ARKnet or community organizations associated with the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

LISTSERV list owners can use the Mailing list management interface to manage subscribers, change the list configuration (list description, make public or private, and other settings), set moderation, create reports, and more. Currently the only person who can delete a LISTSERV mailing list is the LISTSERV Administrator. Contact helpdesk@uark.edu with the name of the list that you want to have deleted. Your request will be routed to the LISTSERV Administrator for resolution. A mailing list administrator does not have the file permissions needed to purge archives without assistance from the LISTSERV maintainer. Archives come in units that are determined at the time a mailing list is created. The default is monthly. Once the archives that need deleted are determined, contact LISTSERV support at 5-2905 to provide that data for the listserv maintainer.

LISTSERV Commands

You can send commands to LISTSERV mailing lists. Make sure that when you do that you email the server, and do not send LISTSERV commands to an actual mailing list address.

All commands directed to a University of Arkansas LISTSERV mailing list should be sent to:
listserv@listserv.uark.edu

  • Do not send LISTSERV commands to an actual mailing list address.
  • Do not include a subject line in the message to the LISTSERV.
  • Do not include a signature file or any text other than the command itself.
  • In the body of the message, use one of the following commands:

Note: Once subscribed, all messages sent to LISTSERV must be sent from the address with which you originally subscribed.

list global searchstring to obtain a list of LISTSERV lists
The list global alone would produce too large an email, so a search string must be included. Replace the word "searchstring" with an actual search string.
subscribe listname fullname to subscribe to a list
Replace the word "listname" with the name of a LISTSERV mailing list (the part of the list address before the @ symbol) and the word "fullname" with your full name.

set listname nomail
set listname mail

Replace the word "listname" with the name of a LISTSERV mailing list (the part of the list address before the @ symbol). "nomail" will cease mail to you from the specified list (you will still be subscribed). "mail" will resume mail to you from the specified list.
set listname repro
set listname norepro
to toggle off or on your receipt of your own postings to a list
Replace the word "listname" with the name of a LISTSERV mailing list (the part of the list address before the @ symbol). "norepro" will cause your postings to the list to NOT be sent back to you.
set listname digest to set up your subscription to receive a daily digest of list email (You will receive one message each day with all posts to the list from that day)
Replace the word "listname" with the name of a LISTSERV mailing list (the part of the list address before the @ symbol).
query listname to see your subscription options for a list
Use the set commands to change these options. Replace the word "listname" with the name of a LISTSERV mailing list (the part of the list address before the @ symbol).

LISTSERV Etiquette

  • Keep posts limited to the topics intended for discussion on the list. If you deviate from the intended discussion topics, someone might recommend a list more suited for your discussion.
  • Be careful when replying to the author of a list message. Most email systems will send your reply to the entire list if you simply use Reply.
  • Include a portion or summary of the message that you're responding to, but don't forward the entire message.
  • Identify yourself. This could be your first and last name and possibly your school or place of business.
  • Don't spam or use the LISTSERV group to promote or sell commercial services or products.
  • Don't use all uppercase letters when writing a message to the list. This is thought of as shouting.
  • Don't send meaningless messages such as, "I agree!" with no content.
  • Don't flame. This is an emotionally charged posting that is often directed at someone. Most lists do not tolerate flaming at all. If you have a conflict with an individual on the list, send them a private email message instead of using the LISTSERV to air the grievance publicly.
  • Don't be critical of people's queries posted to the listserv. Many people are new to LISTSERV messages and are just learning. Send someone a private message to make a gentle suggestion concerning their question, if you think it is warranted.
