Thunderbird Email Client

Entering Your Account Information in Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird. A setup wizard starts automatically. You will be asked to select import options. (This instruction was written for a new install not importing from another account.) Having opted not to import anything, click Next.
  2. Email account is selected by default. Click Next.
  3. Enter your name and email address. Click Next.
    If you are using Exchange Mail enter your email address as
    username@uark.edu
    (where "username" is your UARK username) in the Email address field.
  4. Select IMAP as the type of incoming server.
  5.  Enter:
    mail.uark.edu

    as the Incoming Server.
    • If you are using Exchange Mail,enter:
      exchange.uark.edu
      as the Incoming Server.
    • If you are On Campus, enter:
      mail.uark.edu
      as the Outgoing Server.
    • If you are Off Campus, or on a laptop that will be used off campus to send email, enter:
      smtp.uark.edu
      as the Outgoing Server. Click Next.
  6. Your UARK username is entered as the Incoming and Outgoing User Name (from the email address supplied previously). Click Next.
  7. Enter an Account Name for this account. Click Next.
  8. Verify the information entered is correct and click Finish.
  9. You will be prompted for your UARK password. Click Cancel.
    • If you are using Exchange Mail,
      Go to Tools, Account Settings.
      Click Server Settings under the account you just created and select SSL under Use secure connection.
      Ensure the Use secure authentication box is not checked.
      Click Outgoing Server (SMTP). Ensure the account you just created is selected and click Edit. Select SSL under Use secure connection. To save the changes click OK to the SMTP Server window, and then click OK to the Account Settings window.
    • If you are On Campus,
      Go to Tools, Account Settings.
      Click Server Settings under the account you just created and select TLS under Use secure connection.
      Ensure the Use secure authentication box is not checked.
      Click Outgoing Server (SMTP). Ensure the account you just created is selected and click Edit. Select TLS under Use secure connection. To save the changes click OK to the SMTP Server window, and then click OK to the Account Settings window.  
    • If you are Off Campus,
      Go to Tools, Account Settings.
      Click Server Settings under the account you just created and select TLS under Use secure connection.
      Ensure the Use secure authentication box is not checked.
      Click Outgoing Server (SMTP). Ensure the account you just created is selected and click Edit.
      Enter:

      in the Port field. Ensure the Use name and password box is checked. In the User Name field ensure your UARK username is entered. Select TLS under Use secure connection. To save the changes click OK on the SMTP Server window, and then click OK on the Account Settings window.

Accessing the UA Directory

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol provides a simple protocol that allows you to access and search email addresses on campus.

  1. From Thunderbird's menu bar, click Tools, Account Settings.
  2. Click Composition & Addressing under your email account. Select Use a different LDAP server. Click Edit directories.
  3. Click Add. Enter the following information:
    Name:
    UA directory
    Hostname:
    acme.uark.edu

    Base DN:
    ou=People,o=uark.edu,o=UoA
  4. To save the changes click OK to the Directory Server Properties, and click OK to the Account Settings.

HTML or Rich Text

Not everyone has email software that is compatible with text features available within Thunderbird. Plain text is recommended for universal compatibility.

  1. From Thunderbird's menu bar click Tools, Account Settings.
  2. Click Composition & Addressing under your email account.
  3. Uncheck the box next to Compose Messages in HTML format under Composition.
  4. Click OK to save the changes.

Deleting mail

  1. From Thunderbird's menu bar click Tools, Account Settings.
  2. Click Server Settings under your email account.
  3. Choose one of the following methods for deleting messages and click OK to save the changes:
  • From the drop down menu: Move it to the Trash folder (Recommended) and check Empty Trash on Exit.
  • Mark it as deleted and check Clean Up (Expunge) Inbox on exit.
  • Remove it immediately.

Account Maintenance

Go to mail.uark.edu and click the Account Summary and Options link to forward your email, set a vacation message, filter out unwanted email messages, and check your email quota.

Expanding Full Headers

Full headers are needed for error tracing and abuse reporting. If you have received abusive email and would like to report it, forward the email to abuse@uark.edu with the headers fully expanded. To expand full headers in Thunderbird:

  1. While viewing a message, from Thunderbird's menu bar click View, Headers, and select All.
  2. To send the full header, copy and paste the information into a new message.

Setting Up RSS Feed Access

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Go to File, New, Account.
  3. Select RSS News & Blogs. Click Next.
  4. Name the account. Click Next, and then Finish.
  5. Select the account you created on the right, and click Manage Subscriptions.
  6. Click Add and enter the Feed URL.
  7. Choose a storage location, and select whether you want to show the article summaries instead of downloading the web pages. Click OK.

Synchronizing IMAP Files for Offline Use

  1. Select File, Offline, Download and Synch messages.
  2. Use the Select button and choose mail folders for offline use.
  3. Select the option to work offline when download is complete.
  4. Click the icon to return online.
