Using Windows Mobile Devices with the UA Exchange server
Important note regarding data usage: The cost of data usage with push technology is considerably higher. ITS strongly recommends users of the EAS options purchase an unlimited data plan for their smartphone device in order to avoid additional costly monthly data charges from their provider.
Setting Up Synchronization
- Open the ActiveSync application on the Windows Mobile device. It is sometimes located in the Programs folder. Do not open the email application on the phone at this time.
- Select Menu, Configure Server or use the link to configure the Exchange account.
- Enter:
exchange.uark.edu for the server address, and put a checkmark in This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection. Click Next.
- Enter your username and password. Enter:
uark.edu for the domain name. Select Save Password if you do not want to enter your password every time you sync (recommended). Click Next.
- Unless otherwise desired, leave Contacts, Calendar, Email, and Tasks selected for Synchronization.
- Options can be selected from this screen to change how much email and calendar information is synchronized. Changing these settings can increase data usage and power consumption considerably.
- Click Finish.
- Open the Inbox or Messaging application to verify email is being received.
Basic Usage Recommendations
- Sent Items are stored in the Sent Items folder on the Exchange server.
- Select Menu, Tools, Manage Folders to add additional folders to be synchronized. By default, only the Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, and Drafts folders are synchronized.
- Click the dropdown arrow next to inbox in the upper left corner to select a different synchronized folder to view.
- If you have multiple junk email boxes, it can cause errors syncing to mobile devices. To determine which one is the real junk email folder, within Outlook right-click on either folder; whichever one has the option to "empty junk e-mail" is the real one. If the other folder contains content you wish to keep, move the content prior to deleting it.
- The Find Online option when adding an email recipient searches the Exchange Global Address List and will display other Exchange users.
- If a message is larger than the default limit set in ActiveSync, you can use the Download Message option to download the rest of it.
- Notes will not sync via ActiveSync, but will during a hardwire sync.
