Using Palm OS based devices such as the Treo 650 and 680 with Exchange

Important note regarding Data usage:
The cost of data usage with push technology is considerably higher. University IT Services strongly recommends users of the EAS options purchase an unlimited data plan for their smartphone device in order to avoid additional costly monthly data charges from their provider.

Upgrading to Versamail 3.5 and the EAS add-on

University IT Services strongly recommends using version 3.5 of VersaMail and the EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) update in order to take full advantage of the Exchange features on the Palm OS device. IT Services will not be supporting versions of Versamail older than version 3.5 with the Exchange services

VersaMail 3.5 - The Treo 680 ships with Versamail 3.5. The 650 will require purchase of the software (approximately $9.95 from Palm).

EAS(Exchange ActiveSync) update - The Treo 680 can use the EAS update (approximately $2.95 from Palm) in order to enable wireless email and calendar information "push".

The EAS update cannot be enabled until Versamail 3.5 is installed and configured for use with Exchange.

Entering Your Account Information

Prior to entering account information, install the Versamail 3.5 upgrade if necessary.

Note : If you do a hard reset of your palm device, you will need to reinstall the Versamail update.

You will be prompted to reset your device after installation of the software.

Configuring account settings

1. Press the Home button on the Treo keyboard.
2. Click the Email icon. If the icon still has Versamail for the title, you have not successfully installed version 3.5.
3. Type:
   UAExchange
   for the Account Name, and type:
   Exchange Activesync
   for the Mail Service.
4. Click Next.
5. Type your UARK username including the @uark.edu (for example: yourusername@uark.edu) and your password.
6. Click Next.
7. Type:
   exchange.uark.edu
   for the mail server. Click next and follow the instructions on the remaining screens.
8. Synchronize with the exchange server to complete the setup process. Sync can be done manually or can be set to recur periodically via the program options.

Installing the EAS update on the Treo 680

1. When you have downloaded the EAS_SP2_Update.prc file, drag it to the Palmone Quick Install icon on your desktop.
2. Select the user for your palm device, and click OK.
3. Connect the Treo to the workstation, and synchronize it to install the update.
4. Press the Home button on the Treo button area.
5. Click the EAS Update icon.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.

If you have enabled automatic sync, it should be disabled since the EAS update will enable the data push which runs automatically in the background.
