For Students Leaving the University

On the first class day of each fall and spring semester, UARK accounts are checked and those belonging to non-returning graduates and other former students no longer enrolled at the University will receive a warning via email that their UARK account will be deleted. Two weeks later, these accounts will be locked. Two weeks after that, these accounts will be purged. The purging of a UARK account includes deletion of the email account and its contents, the comp.uark.edu account and its contents, and loss of access to ISIS, dial-up, lab computers, UA wireless, Jabber, and WebCT.

Graduates who continue to enroll each semester at the University do not have to take any measures to retain their UARK accounts.

Non-returning students should establish alternate email accounts and save the contents of their comp.uark.edu accounts. Seniors are encouraged to use an alternative email account when sending out resumes and other correspondence.

Backing up Files on your comp.uark.edu Account
(My Documents in the General Access Labs)

Files saved to My Documents in a University IT Services General Access Lab (Union, Library, ADSB, ELC, Quad) are saved to the comp.uark.edu account belonging to the person who logged into the computer, and personal web sites are typically on comp.uark.edu. The contents of a comp.uark.edu account can be saved and burned to a CD in any of the General Access Computing Labs on campus. Students must bring a CD to the lab and can then ask the lab operator on duty to assist them in copying all of the contents of their comp.uark.edu account to the CD. See our General Access Computing Lab page for lab locations.

Mail

Backing Up Your Email

You can use an external email account to retrieve your UARK mail before your UARK account expires.
Note: This process only works for mail from the UARK inbox. If you have other mailboxes you want to back up, you will need to move all that mail into your inbox before you pull your UARK mail into another mail service.

To move mail from other folders into your Inbox:

  1. Open the folder and select all of the messages.
  2. From the "Move to folder" dropdown menu, select Inbox.
  3. The page will refresh and return a messages saying that the folder is empty. Repeat this process for all folders that contain mail that you want to keep.

Once you have moved all of your mail into the Inbox, you will need to use another mail client to move that mail to a new account. The following mail clients will support collecting external mail (such as UARK mail):

  • Yahoo
See the Yahoo Accessing External Mail help page for instructions.
  • mac.com
See the Help File under Checking a second email account.
You can use .Mac Mail on the web to check a separate POP email account in addition to your .Mac Mail
account. To check a second email account:
    1. Go to www.mac.com and click Mail.
    2. Click Preferences, and then click Accounts.
    3. Under Check Other POP Mail, type the POP account name, POP server host name, and the account user name and password.
    4. From the Import POP To pop-up menu, choose a folder where you want POP mail messages delivered.
    5. Select the "Leave Messages on Server" checkbox if you want to leave the original messages on the POP host server so you can still read them when you access the account directly.
    6. Click Get Other Mail.
Email from the second account is listed along with your .Mac Mail messages in your .Mac Mail inbox folder (or in the folder specified in Mail preferences). The next time you want to check for new mail, you can choose your POP account in the Go To pop-up menu.
  • MSN Hotmail
If you are a subscriber to MSN Plus, MSN Premium, or MSN HotmailSympatico Mail Extra Storage, you can view messages from your POP email accounts within MSN HotmailSympatico Mail.
  • Gmail
See the Gmail Mail Fetcher help page for instructions.

Available upon request, University IT Services staff will assist you in moving your email to a new account and copying the contents of your comp.uark.edu account (My Documents) to a CD.
